NAC (n-acetyl cysteine) is a variant of L-cysteine, an amino acid that is most commonly used to counteract an overdose of acetaminophen, a pain reliever like Tylenol. But there are other uses for NAC such as prevention of some pulmonary disorders, kidney damage due to imaging, reduction of the effects of influenza and treatment of pulmonary fibrosis as well as infertility treatment in women due to certain types of polycystic ovary syndrome among other types of illnesses and diseases.

NAC is actually an antioxidant that appears to be helping with that 1/3 unknown factor in infertility. In a recent study that provided 120 men with infertility of unknown origin were given NAC for a period of three months, after which they were again tested. The researchers discovered that there was increased sperm motility, viscosity and volume in 60 of the men - hurray for the researcher! Now it gets even better. When they added the trace mineral - just a smidgen (200 mcg) of selenium the volunteers showed hormonal changes that were positive, in addition to the improved parameters of the semen.

So they naturally concluded that the "supplemental selenium and N-acetyl-cysteine improve semen quality." They also advocated their use for male infertility. Urologist in Jaipur
